"Kuranda Exclusive"

Day Tour with Skyrail and Scenic Railway from Cairns

A day tour to the village of Kuranda is on the itinerary of most visitors to Cairns. Our “Kuranda Exclusive” tour is carefully designed in a way that offers you the most comprehensive experiences and the greatest enjoyment of that popular historic destination.

Traveling on the Kuranda Scenic Train

After picking you up from your accommodation place we proceed to the railway station in the suburb of Freshwater. Already on the way to the train and all along the day, your driver/guide will provide interesting information and guide you from one experience to the other. Whilst waiting for the Kuranda Scenic Train, we take you through Lynch’s Cottage and the small railway museum, and you have an opportunity to explore the interesting setup and architecture of the Railway Station Restaurant.

In the train you travel in Gold Class (First Class) where there is more room to move around and space to take photos of the occasional splendid views down the coast than in the regular class. During the journey alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and snacks are served by the friendly staff. The train stops at the Barron River Falls and passengers can get out for a view of the amazing rugged cliff face. In the wet season the falls are especially spectacular.

After a 90 minutes ride we arrive at the Kuranda Railway Station, which has been popular since the early days for its decorations with tropical plants.

Cruise on Barron River Boat

Before venturing into the village of Kuranda we take in the sights of the Barron River and its fringing rainforest during an interpreted 45 minute boat cruise. The boat guide will point out the varied wildlife and talk about the challenges for the first pioneers to cross the river. In the winter months it is almost certain to observe freshwater crocodiles lazing in the sun.

Walk through the Village of Kuranda

On the walk into the village of Kuranda you stroll through the historic pub, and your guide will explain some of the many historic photos and exhibits in the building, which is one of only a few old buildings left in town.

Walking down the fig tree-lined main street and passing dozens of souvenir shops and food outlets, your guide will take you to the old markets, which were established in 1978. They still reflect the flair of the alternative lifestyle of the 60s and 70s, when Kuranda became a popular place for hippies and artists.

Personal meeting with Aboriginal people

After ample free time and the opportunity for lunch, you share a cup of tea or coffee with one or more Aboriginal people of the area. In a relaxed atmosphere you can ask any question and discuss past and present social and cultural issues. You can also watch an aboriginal artist at work.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

Now it is time for some amazing views as you glide just a few metres over the rainforest canopy on the world’s longest gondola cableway. There are two stops and several short board walks through the rainforest and to lookouts into Barron Gorge. An Interpretive Centre invites you to learn more about the complex ecology of the rainforest and the reasons for its listing as a World Heritage Site. The 7.5 km long Skyrail takes you all the way down to the coast.

Lake Morris Road Lookout

On the way back to your hotel you have an opportunity to enjoy the splendid panorama of Cairns from an elevated lookout on the slopes of the great escarpment.
